Most believers think that death is merely like moving from one space to another. So, they don’t believe we cease to exist. Ever.
Religions do not really provide people with comfort about death, per se, but rather, they teach that there is no death, that we never do cease to exist.
Sam Harris thinks this is bad:
Atheists do not have a dogma they follow. Their thoughts on death are varied.
- Death isn’t so bad.
- Someday, we won’t have to worry about death.
- We can avoid death.
- Some atheists think that death isn’t so bad:
Mark Twain (maybe not an atheist) supposedly said: ”
“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”
Apparently, whatever his beliefs, Twain expected life after death to be like life before death, namely, not existing. The thoughts on this page are really for all people who don’t believe in an afterlife, whether atheist or otherwise.
2. Someday, we won’t have to worry about death.
“Methuselah Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to extending the healthy human lifespan by advancing tissue engineering and regenerative medicine therapies.” – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methuselah_Foundation
3. We can avoid death.
